Hours later, Thain woke up feeling a bit more rested but with aching muscles from the hard floor. Still hungry, with at least two days of no food or water, his muscles were cramping, and the fatigue didn’t seem to go away either. His parched, dry lips felt slightly raw. The small amount of saliva he was able to muster from his cottony tongue just made his lips burn.

“Ready to go?” Thain muttered once he noticed Zeke beginning to stir.

While Zeke slept, Thain had considered his presence in Tula, trying to understand what it all meant. Eventually, his thoughts got around to Naya and the role she had played in Zeke’s rescue.

Unfortunately, that also led to his thinking about the attention Naya had given Zeke, and it was creating that burning sensation in his chest again. If he stopped pretending, though, he would admit to himself that he wanted to ask Naya to be his girlfriend but had not because he was afraid to ruin their friendship. He supposed his feelings for her were the reason he felt so protective, and it really frustrated him that she seemed so aloof over his concern for her. Though he had to admit, it wasn’t her fault that he had never told her how he felt either. Besides, Naya was always ready to help and wouldn’t have stood by if someone was in trouble. There was no reason to believe that she liked Zeke in any other way.

As much as he wanted to hate Zeke for being the cause of their current predicament, he knew it wasn’t his fault. It was evident to Thain that Zeke had no idea how he came to be in Tula. He also was not aware that his presence was important, otherwise the Great Spirit would not have allowed him access into Aztalan. Pushing his thoughts aside, Thain sighed as he sat up and straightened out his clothes. The chill in the air, without his tunic to provide some warmth, was making him shiver.

“Yeah. The faster we get out of here, the faster we might run into some food too. I don’t know about you, but I’m starved and thirsty,” Zeke responded, his voice coming out hoarse. He stood and stretched his back, feeling the muscles still tender. “Any idea which way to go?”

Thain stood and looked at each of the three tunnels leading out of the chamber. Discarding the one they had come from, he considered the two other choices. The pathway on his right was narrow and had a lower ceiling. The one on the left also had a low ceiling but was wider. The relative darkness made it impossible to see farther than a few feet, so they couldn’t really see what lay ahead. Well, not much of a choice seeing he would need to stoop anyway, but he figured the wider path would be easier to navigate. With any luck, the path would not circle back to the dungeons.

“This way,” Thain said pointing to the path on the left.
